How to link to sites outside .kids.us...

... or: When is a hyperlink a hyperlink?

Alexander Svensson continues to cover the development of .kids.us, and has a close look at the first site established there. Particularly fascinating -- with regard to policies in place that forbid hyperlinks that take a user outside of the kids.us domain-- is a links page Alexander has found -- it points to web sites outside .kids.us with content about American presidents. Instead of using actual hyperlinks, the URLs are simply listed there, as part of the page text.

Update: Jeff Neumann responds (thanks) that listing web sites in the way it's done on the Smithsonian's page is perfectly acceptable in .kids.us. Fascinating.

Jeff Neuman:
Thomas, NeuStar is aware of this (as we reviewed the Website). Listing websites as the Smithsonian has, is a perfectly acceptable practice so long as all of the text/content surrounding the link is acceptable. For example, if a website has links that are listed under a heading that has inappropriate content, then such listing will not be allowed. For example, if it said, "To purchase alcohol, go to www.XYZalcoholstore.biz", then such listing link will not be allowed. Please let us know if you have any questions.
So, if it takes three clicks to follow a link, that's ok, but if it's just one click, that's a breach of the policy?
Jeff Neuman:
It is not an issue of "clicks", but rather that in order to get to that link, the end user must affirmatively type that URL into the Browser. It relates to the issue of "interactive services." The Kids.us space recognizes the value of referencing other websites (provided such references are appropriate for children). If we discover that a reference URL is to inappropriate content, then that will be dealt with under the content removal process.
