Stuart Lynn and the alternative roots.

ICANN CEO Stuart Lynn has published a so-called Discussion draft on alternative roots. My notes on this can be found on ICANNwatch. Judith Oppenheimer has written another ICANNwatch item on this, in particular concerning Lynn's perception of the public discussion.

Domain Name Economics

I've tried to take a look at the "big picture" of ICANN you get when you just try to look at the economic aspects of the various activities in the DNS field. The result was called Domain Name Economics and posted to the icann-europe mailing list.

On a related topic, you may wish to have a look at David R. Johnson's presentation on Why A General Assembly Matters. In this text, he asks about what kind of social contract underlies ICANN, and how the organization was originally supposed to work.

mutt-1.3.19 is out.

Another unstable Mutt is out, version 1.3.19. This one contains a new version of gettext (thanks to Edmund Evans), and lots of bug fixes (thanks to Brendan Cully).

Download: full source (recommended) / patch (quite large this time)

A new version of strip is available

A new version of Strip, the Secure Tool for Recalling Important Passwords, has been announced to the strip mailing lists. It's available for download here (source code). The new version is supposed to fix the password generation vulnerability I discovered back in April. It also brings AES encryption, and an integrated S/KEY calculator for the Palm.

PGP key ring analysis

OK, it was slashdotted, but I don't want to lose the link: Drew Streib has published an analysis of the signature relationships in a "full" PGP/GPG key ring. In particular, he looks at the largest "strongly connected" set within the key ring, which consists of about 10000 public keys.

.web statistics

Ben Edelman has done it again: He has examined the .web TLD. His findings indicate that only an extremely small fraction of the 20000-25000 .web domains registered are actually operational.
